Operating Convenience
|
|
|
|
- Easier to use than a transceiver - entirely "hands
Off" in normal operation.
- Automatic bandswitching and tuneup in less than
one second. Never again lose a "rare one" while changing bands!
- Factory tuned. Using data stored in memory,
will deliver full rated power into any load of VSWR <1.5:1 on any
amateur HF band* even without field-programming!
- Easy to field program each band in five
segments for exact match to your antennas.
- Automatic amplifier QSY releases the full
capabilities of CT(tm) and
PacketCluster™.
- Hooks up like an ordinary linear - requires no
special interface or cables.
- Compatible with all modern transceivers.
- Easy-to-read, peak-indicating metering.
- Easy access to 24 & 28 MHz* for authorized
owners, with exclusive personal ID code.
- Compact, transceiver-sized footprint.
- So user-transparent that you may forget you're
using an amplifier.

State Of the Art Technology
|
|
|
|
- RS-232 digital communications port provides remote
access to all front panel functions plus other standard control and
diagnostic functions.
- Fast & silent, heavy-duty solid-state
T/R-QSK. No vacuum relays to wear out.
- Multilayer laminated control circuit board
reduces size and eliminates microprocessor related RFI problems. Highly
modular construction.
- Extensive self-diagnostics. If you connect the
wrong antenna, your '87A will tell you!
- All memories are non-volatile EPROM / EEPROM;
no backup batteries to replace.

Quality And Durability
|
|
|
|
- Professional engineering, manufacturing,
materials, and quality assurance.
- Microprocessor- managed automatic protection of
tubes & other critical components against operator error and
equipment malfunction.
- Factory burn-in system exercises critical
functions hundreds of times before final test, to flush out any
potential flaw.

Inside The Ultimate Linear
The microprocessor-controlled Alpha 87A delivers legendary
Alpha/ETO Power Alpha 77-class, cool maximum legal power - locked key,
no time limit.

|
|
 |
|
 |
|
|
|
Typically robust
Alpha RF power Section (A) uses two Eimac
3CX800A7 triodes in grounded-grid. Blower floats on foam for quiet
cooling. Plate pi-L network has silver-plated heavy tubing main coil,
80-160M coil on grooved ceramic form, and toroid L coil for low
cross-coupling.
Split-stator capacitors permit precise tuning and maximum efficiency at
higher frequencies. Dual plate RF chokes allow optimum efficiency
across the full frequency range. Nine separate pretuned input networks
assure low input VSWR on all HF amateur bands* and most MARS
frequencies.
Power supply
(B) uses massive tape-wound Hipersil(R) transformer like the
ALPHA 77Dx's, banks of matched, full-size computer-grade filter
capacitors. Full-wave bridge rectifier optimizes transformer efficiency
and HV regulation.
Microprocessor-based
controller (C) performs scores of
functions, including counting the incoming drive frequency to insure
that the ALPHA 87A's band and tuning are always correct. Whenever
bandchange is required, in less than one second the control system
automatically by-passes exciter power to the antenna, changes bands and
retunes, and switches the amplifier back in-line!
The controller is packaged on a 6-layer circuit board which saves space
and efficiently decouples digital, analog, and power distribution
circuits. Microprocessor and EPROM sockets permit easy software
upgrades if/as they become available.
Display
section (D) provides bright,
color-coded LED bargraphs for full-time monitoring of peak RF forward
and reflected power plus grid current. A fourth display is shared by
less frequently used tune assist, plate current, and HV functions. All
displays are easily readable from 10-15 feet.
Front panel
push buttons (E) make it simple to
field-program tuning and loading in five segments across each band. LED
codes also identify any protective trip out which occurs.
Motor/driver
section (F) incorporates 3
precision stepper motors which position the bandswitch and variable
capacitors. Driver circuitry converts digital control signals from the
microprocessor into power pulses required to rotate the motors.
